The art of marbling

Painting on water.
Keeping a moment.

Marbling art is the practice of shaping floating pigments on a thickened water bath, then transferring the pattern to paper. Ebru is a traditional form of this art, bringing together flowing patterns and delicate floral designs.

  1. Drop the colour.

Brushes scatter pigments across the surface, where each colour gently pushes against the next.

  2. Follow the pattern.

A stylus or comb draws the colour into flowing forms, from abstract patterns to delicate flowers.

  3. Lift the paper.

A sheet touches the surface and lifts away with the design. Each print records its own moment.

Meet the maker

Hello, I’m Özge.

My connection with Ebru began in my school years. Formal courses and further study deepened that interest, and I have practised regularly since 2019.

Now based in the Edinburgh area, I’m building Marbloom as a home for traditional art, creative exploration and shared experiences.

Beginning with Ebru, I hope to create a welcoming space where people can slow down, work with their hands and discover the pleasure of making.

Marbling notes

A closer look at the craft.

Little introductions to the materials and moments behind the patterns.

01 / FLOATING COLOUR

Why does the paint stay on top?

The prepared bath and carefully balanced pigments allow colour to spread across the surface, giving you time to shape a design.

Read the note

Ebru uses a thickened water bath. The bath’s viscosity slows movement, while surface tension and the preparation of the paints help control how the colours spread. That balance is part of the craft.

02 / THE WATER BATH

More than just water.

The marbling bath has a quiet but essential role: it gives the floating pattern a surface to rest on.

Read the note

Traditional and contemporary marblers prepare their baths with different thickeners, including plant-derived materials such as tragacanth or carrageenan. Preparation and resting time depend on the material and technique.

03 / TOOLS OF THE TRADE

A brush with tradition.

A brush, a slender stylus and a comb can produce an extraordinary variety of patterns.

Read the note

Traditional Ebru brushes often combine rose stems and horsehair. The brush scatters droplets; the stylus shapes individual forms; the comb draws repeated lines through the floating colours.
